![]() Galdós's complex characterizations within the deceptively simple rustic love triangle hold serious philosophical elements that can be read on many levels. Marianela is a novel that illuminates many facets of nineteenth-century Spanish society. But complications develop when an eye surgeon and Pablo's beautiful cousin come to town. Pablo believes that Marianela must be the most beautiful woman in the world, given her inner beauty, kindness, and generosity with him and promises to marry her. In her friendship with Pablo, she finds the understanding and affection she has missed in her life. She is hired by a wealthy landowner as a guide for his blind son, Pablo. Marianela, set in Socartes, a fictional ore-mining village in northern Spain, tells the story of a young girl who is unable to hold a physically demanding job in the mining community because of her physical condition. This is the first English translation since those nineteenth-century publications. After this early novel was warmly received by the public in 1878, Marianela was soon followed by successful reprints, revised editions, and translations. ![]() Widely considered the greatest novelist after Cervantes, Galdós is recognized as the leading literary figure in nineteenth-century Spain and the founder of Spanish narrative realism. The book submits the tales of 13 inspirational American women who-to use the recurring language of the copy itself-overcame adversity to realize their dreams. Wistfully and delicately illustrated by the watercolorist Alexandra Boiger, it is based on a feminist meme that originated with Elizabeth Warren: “Nevertheless, she persisted,” was Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s dismissive characterization of the Massachusetts senator, whom Republicans voted to formally silence as she was reading a letter from Coretta Scott King about Jeff Sessions’ stained civil rights record. If the Hillary Clinton campaign were governed by a single human intelligence, and that intelligence sat down to write kid’s literature shortly after the 2016 election, this would be it. ![]() But now, she has come out with a children’s book, She Persisted, that feels like a pure distillation of an inherited feminist worldview. That article posited that the lot of Chelsea Clinton was to “have parents … who loom so large that it remains impossible for you to write a story of your own.” With her recent salty subtweets of 45 and his cronies, Chelsea seemed to express a more personalized, even quirky, allegiance to her mom. ![]() ![]() ![]() Caretakers give up their sense of self to become who and what the Borderline or Narcissist needs them to be. Here, Margalis Fjelstad describes how people get into a Caretaker role with a Borderline or Narcissist, and how they can get out. These negative behaviors don't happen once in a while, they happen almost continuously in their intimate relationships and most often, and especially with their Caretaker family member. Their ability to function normally or pleasantly can suddenly change in an instant, like flipping a switch. However, in intimate relationships, they can be emotional, aggressive, demeaning, illogical, paranoid, accusing, and controlling-in the extreme. Often they appear to be normally functioning at work and in public interactions, and Narcissists may even be highly effective, in the short term, in some work or social situations. ![]() People with Borderline or Narcissistic Personality Disorders have a serious mental illness that primarily affects their intimate, personal, and family relationships.
